Hygroscopy and adaptive architectural façades: an overview

Abstract Hygroscopic properties of wood have been utilized in adaptive façades to respond variation humidity levels. Shape-shifting materials developed replace mechanical actuators that climatic with zero-energy consumption. This paper presents a systematic review the literature on use hygromorphic behaviour developing architectural façades, primary focus identifying venues implementation hygroscopic actuation facades. The triangulates intersection between design parameters manufacturing strategies and their application as passive motion mechanism focuses state-of-the-art experimental work design, specific interest methods response evaluation tracking, analysis current applications real weather conditions, performance prediction. Results reveal most studied papers programmable moisture content façades. From analysis, it was shown programming mainly takes place through fabrication methods, followed by layer configurations, which act are controlled differences properties.
